Blue-Chip MLPs’ Outlook for North American Energy Markets

We look to commentary from the management teams at Enterprise Products Partners LP and Plains All American Pipeline LP for insights into the direction of North American commodity prices and emerging opportunities throughout the energy value chain.

Near-Term Oversupply to Put LNG Tankers’ Day-Rates under Pressure

Specialized vessels that transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been one of the lone bright spots in the marine-transport industry, thanks to rising demand in China and other emerging markets and a upsurge in Japanese imports in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. But the day-rates earned by these vessels will come under pressure in the near term.

Floating Pipelines

Although the long-term growth story remains intact for the LNG shipping industry, investors should note that the market faces a near-term oversupply of vessels between 2013 and 2015 that could weaken rates in the spot market. We prefer conservatively run names that balance contract coverage and steady cash flow with solid growth opportunities.
