02/23/16: On Midstream Counterparty Risk

Over the past 12 months, we’ve warned of growing counterparty risk in the midstream space, frequently citing Crestwood Equity Partners LP’s issues with Quicksilver Resources and Sabine Oil & Gas. Our strategy for mitigating these risks remains avoiding names with exposure to out-of-favor basins where production declines likely will be most extreme and the potential recovery could be limited. We also continue to focus on the growth stories that still work in the current environment.

01/22/16: On Today’s Bounce

The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil rallied to about $32 per barrel today, rebounding from the Jan. 20 low of $26.19 per barrel. A number of readers have emailed to ask whether this bounce means that the energy sector is out of the woods.

12/08/15: On Yesterday’s Selloff

Yesterday’s big selloff in the MLP space reflects the headline risks that will continue to haunt the group in coming months. Investors should continue to remain disciplined and focus on quality. Indiscriminate selling ultimately creates opportunities for discriminating investors.
