Portfolio: A Look at the High Yield Energy List

By Roger S. Conrad on Jun. 18, 2021

Clearly we could have picked a better time to launch our High Yield Energy List than late May 2019—on the eve of a pandemic that briefly sent oil prices below zero, forced dramatic cutbacks in shale output and triggered an historic number of sector dividend cuts.

But equally, since November 2020 this portfolio has enjoyed one amazing comeback. As our table shows, a handful of the recommendations made in 2019 are still underwater.

But as a group, these best in class midstream and downstream C-Corps and MLPs have erased those early losses and then some. And while several have cut payouts along the way, as a group they’ve continued to generate high current income during two of the most volatile years for oil and gas companies in memory.
