The past two years have been a story of resilience for North America’s premier midstream companies. But if preliminary guidance from best in class Portfolio companies is any indication, 2021 is setting up as one of unfolding sector recovery.
Certainly that doesn’t apply to every midstream company. There still 27 of them, for example, on our Endangered Dividends List coming into the New Year. That follows more than five-dozen sector dividend cuts since early March of this year.
Seven other companies in our broader MLPs and Midstream coverage universe have eliminated payouts entirely, with at least four them presenting very real bankruptcy risk in the next 12 months. And as the fall of the former Hi-Crush demonstrates, when a midstream company files Chapter 11, the most likely outcome for shareholders is a total wipeout.
